Gia-An Trinh - Economics and Law

Hello ! I'm currently a grade 12 IB student at Richmond Secondary School. I'm a driven individual with a passion for debate, working with kids, and poetry.

First and foremostly, I am an IB student. I boast an average of 5-6 in all of my classes, as well as an Extended Essay written on absurd educational philosophy and the role of rebellion in defining the student-teacher relationship.

I am a competitive debater and have been for a year and a half, specializing in British Parliamentary and Public Forum debate styles. I participated in my first tournament in June 2018 at the SFU under the style of Public Forum. As well, I am a TA at Vancouver Debate Academy and co-coach an elementary class. I work alongside some of UBCDS's most competitive debaters.

On top of my rigorous debate commitments, between classes and teaching, I am the co-president of Richmond Secondary School's Debate Team. I lead the club with one of my closest friends, Nicole Manhas, and together we teach lessons on the foundations of debate, plan tournaments and registration, as well as serve as community role models.

In my free time, I write poetry. I've been writing creatively since I was twelve years old, and writing has always been a passion of mine. Recently, my love of poetry and scrap-booking have fused to produce my art journal, one of my core CAS projects. My writing has taken on an entirely new form in the recent year reaching new heights of both syntax and creative direction.

As well, I adore working with kids, as I both teach debate to an elementary class, as well as have taught younger children as a badminton assistant coach. My passion for children doesn't stop there, as I aspire to have kids of my own and a domestic life one day in the future.

The most important and central concept in my life is love. I am a vocal activist for the LGBT+ community.

But by now my desire and will were turned,

Like a balanced wheel rotated evenly,

By the Love that moves the sun and the other stars.

(Dante Alighieri, Paradiso Canto XXXIII)
